Robot Engineers (RE)

Entering Grades 3 - 6

Join us for a week of fun with amazing robots! In this full week of half-days camp learn about the uses of robots in our world and spend time experimenting with super cool red-hot robots. Experiment with sound sensing, line-tracking, solar powered and programmable robots! Discover the science of circuits and how robots use their components to explore and react to what is around them. Use your skills to build your very own working robot to take home with you!

Each camper will build and take home their own Robot and Snap Circuits (pictured above) at the end of the week!

The Kingii Dragon Robot, (chalamydosaurus kingii, or frilled lizard), is a smart super lizard with artificial intelligence.  When the robot feels threatened, it gapes its mouth, flashes its eyes, and dramatically spreads and flaps its frill (pleated material that encircles its head) in a threatening manner!  If that doesn't scare you away, it turns around, and its front and back legs erratically move as if it were scampering away from danger.  Fun to build, the Kingii Dragon Robot by OWI has an infrared sensor that is programmed to react to different types of movement based on which setting it's on.  It might act shocked, try to bluff its attacker, or even approach you like a pet lizard when it doesn't sense danger!

Daily Themes
(Order of activities may vary)

Everyday Engineers - Day 1

The fundamentals of robotics will be reviewed, analyzing robot anatomy and discovering how each of their components works. Introduce Engineers and their importance in our everyday lives. Study Simple Machines and their use in mechanics. Children will begin to construct their very own robot to take home at the end of the week

Reverse Engineering  - Day 2
Have you ever wondered how something works? Reverse Engineering will help us discover the principals at work through analysis of its structure, function and operation. Campers will explore the forces at work in Common Machines and Toys. Continued work on the robots will increase our understanding of their structure, function and operations.

Electrical Engineering - Day 3
Get ready for a Shocking day with these Electrifying experiments! Test conductors and insulators, build a large model circuit board, and see plasma power. We’ll get High Voltage with an experiment from Tesla. Campers will continue working on robot completion.

Illumination Engineers - Day 4
Campers will revisit sensors in a “Different Light” – uncover the hidden mysteries of white light, the extraordinary properties of lasers, and explore fiber optics and holograms! The final stages of robot building will be completed.

Robot Engineers - Day 5
Campers will learn about robot design as well as the applications of robot technology. They will draw a blueprint for their own Imagi-Bot. Final tests will be run on the completed robots and each child will take home their robot to continue the exploration of robotics at home!
