12 Days of Holidays—Activities for Long Island Families

Dec 18, 2013 12:00 AM

School is out this weekend for the holidays! Looking for a few ideas to stay busy during the holiday break? Take a read through our 12 Days of Holidays for some great ideas!

  1. Walk through the story “A Sweet Family Christmas” at Hicks Nursery. Admission is free with the donation of a non-perishable food item(s) for Long Island Cares. Located at 100 Jericho Turnpike in Westbury, Hicks Nursery is the perfect place for a little getaway!

  2. Track Santa! Yep. See where the big guy is and how far he has left to go! Take a look here.

  3. Take a look at the Nassau County Museum of Art’s Family Sundays! Chock-full of family-friendly fun, these guided activities are free with a museum admission.

  4. Looking for the perfect Christmas tree this year? Why not go out and cut your own! Take a look at this great list of Long Island Christmas Tree Farms.

  5. Book a holiday party with Mad Science of Long Island! Nothing will shake up your holiday fun like a private party with Mad Science. Our hands-on parties include exciting activities and science experiments for the whole crowd! Give us a call today at (866) 331-2493 to find out more.

  6. Looking for some unique and last minute holiday gift ideas? Look no further. Why not take the whole family over to the 25th Annual Craft Fair & Flea Market at Ward Melville High School. With over 100 vendors you’ll find something for everyone, plus you’ll have a blast looking at all the creations people have brought.

  7. Take in a holiday show at the theatre! With shows geared just for the kids and reasonable ticket prices, you can take the whole gang for some holiday fun. Not sure which theatre to go to? Check out the holiday shows put on by the Theatre Three in Port Jefferson, the John W. Engeman Theatre in Northport, Theatre 7 in Holbrook, Adelphi University, or the NYCB Theatre.

  8. Go for a drive and check out the Christmas lights. If you’re not sure where to start, take a look at this awesome list of spectacular holiday lights!

  9. Head to the rink. Skating is a great way to get active in the winter. Long Island has lots of skating rinks—both indoors and out.  Before you head out, take a look at this list of indoor and outdoor skating rinks in Long Island.

  10. Check out your local Long Island Library! There are many special holiday activities for children planned (like story times and game days) that will get you out of the house without breaking the bank. Find the library nearest to you and give them a quick call or check out their website.

  11. Make some holiday crafts together with your children. If you’re not the crafty type how about some retro-in-house games like “Cops & Robbers” or “Hide-and-Seek?”

  12. Have a party! Open the doors to your friends, family, neighbours…the more the merrier! Better yet, have a “potluck” style holiday party and enjoy the feast that your guests bring.

From all of us here at Mad Science of Long Island, Happy Holidays! We hope to see you in the New Year!
