Long Island Schools Enhancing Curriculums with STEM Approach

Dec 4, 2013 12:00 AM

A Traditional Education

For a long time, the education system has delivered its subjects in a very separate and one-size-fits-all manner. This approach has been effective for some students, but for many it can prove difficult and even put up barriers to learning. Over the last decade, educators have been incorporating what is known as STEM education.

What is STEM Education?

STEM is an acronym for science, technology, engineering and math; and education that uses this approach is based on exciting learners and approaching these topics from multiple angles. Project-based learning is a big part of this approach and because of the hands-on and inquiry-based nature of this type of education; it is often met with much excitement and interest from students!

Rather than requiring students to master a subject through the memorization of facts, students get to actually experience and take part in real-life scenarios that demonstrate a particular topic. Take tornadoes for example. Through the programming provided by Mad Science of Long Island, children can actually take part in an experiment that produces a mini-tornado and learn all about the science that produces them instead of just learning the terms and facts from a textbook and resigning them to memory. Where does Mad Science of Long Island fit in?

So why is Mad Science of long Island so excited about the STEM approach? Because our business is all about providing exciting and engaging science-based experiences for children! Kids can touch, taste, smell, hear and feel many different science topics through the multitude of services we provide. Our programming is directly in-line with STEM’s objectives as well as local school curriculums. Through our lesson plans that come along with some of our in-class science workshops, educators can bring the benefits provided by our programming further into their classrooms.

Mad Science of Long Island has been working together with many of the schools in our area. Because of this track record and experience, we are very familiar with the challenges that local schools face in teaching science to children. We are excited about our services and the benefits that they offer both to students and educators. If you’re looking for a fun way to enhance your science curriculum and instill a love of the sciences; give us a call and find out what we can do for your classroom!
